Capt. Robert Caldwell Maunsell Mayne, R.G.A.
Robert Caldwell Mansell Mayne - born 26 October 1894; son of R J M Mayne, Superintendent of Indian Police, Madras. Educated at Glenalmond School from Michaelmas Term 1908 to 1913 and at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. 2nd Lt, RGA - 1914; Lt - 1915; Capt - 1917; retired 1928.
Military Cross for an action at Vilali Observation Post, near Volkovniac, Italy in May 1917 while serving with 302nd Siege Battery, RGA. He was decorated by the King on 1 March 1919. Mentioned in dispatches for service in Italy in the London Gazette of 20 November 1917 and the Italian Bronze Medal for Military Valor in the London Gazette of 8 March 1920.
Military Cross
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in carrying out a very difficult registration under heavy shell fire, which enabled the battery to destroy an enemy trench, only a part of which could be seen. He had to cross the open under continual enemy barrage to get to his observation post. He performed fine service.
