Oggi è stato battuto all'asta, per 5,500 GBP più diritti e tasse varie, un notevole gruppo inglese, importante anche per la storia navale italiana, le decorazioni del comandante del sommergibile HMS Upright, affondatore dell'incrociatore Armando Diaz.

Il primo attacco dell'Upright fu tentato il 5 febbraio 1941, nel corso della sesta missione di guerra (la quarta nel Mediterraneo) del battello, iniziata il 29 gennaio precedente: individuato un convoglio dell'Asse al largo delle Isole Kerkenna, il sommergibile lanciò quattro siluri ai danni di un mercantile nemico (probabilmente il tedesco Wachtfels), mancando però il bersaglio; il battello rientrò a Malta l'8 febbraio senza aver ottenuto altri risultati. Molto più successo ebbe la settima missione di guerra, iniziata il 19 febbraio: nelle prime ore del 23 febbraio, sempre al largo delle Kerkenna, l'Upright silurò e affondò il mercantile italiano Silvia Tripcovich da 2.365 tonnellate di stazza lorda, sorpreso mentre procedeva per Tripoli senza scorta. Due giorni più tardi,
nelle prime ore del 25 febbraio, il battello mise a segno un ulteriore attacco: entrato in contatto con un gruppo di unità da guerra della Regia Marina (la scorta a distanza di un convoglio dell'Asse), l'Upright lanciò quattro siluri ai danni delle unità nemiche colpendo in pieno l'incrociatore leggero Armando Diaz, che affondò nel giro di sei minuti con gravi perdite umane. Il cacciatorpediniere Ascari, di scorta all'incrociatore, diede la caccia al sommergibile ma senza esito, e il giorno successivo l'Upright rientrò a Malta.

Captain Dudley Norman, Royal Navy, who won the D.S.C. when in command of H.M. Submarine H.44 for sinking shipping off the coast of Norway in 1940, and the D.S.O. when in command of H.M. Submarine Upright for sinking the Italian cruiser Armando Diaz in February 1941; he was afterwards the first Commodore of the Malaysian Navy.

On 21 February, Norman took Upright inside the Tunisian harbour of Sfax to look for targets, but found none. “As we were then scraping along the bottom at periscope depth,” he said, “it seemed prudent to reverse course and retire to the open sea.” Four nights later, Upright was on the surface off Sfax, charging main batteries, when the officer of the watch sighted “a cruiser or a very large destroyer, escorted by two destroyers, one on each bow”.
Norman estimated the target’s course and speed, fired four torpedoes, and then dived. “As I got below,” he said, “the periscope was going up. I got it on the right bearing in time to see the first torpedo hit, in the light of which I considered the target was probably a cruiser.” He had, in fact, sunk the 5,000 ton Italian cruiser Armando Diaz and was awarded the D.S.O.
